Action research in the classroom: Applying spacing and retrieval practice

I have been a classroom teacher for nearly two decades, but have only recently undertaken action research. In this post I describe my experiences with spacing (Bjork & Bjork, 2014; Cepeda et al, 2006; Küpper-Tetzel et al, 2014) and retrieval practice (Agarwal et al, 2012; Rawson et all 2013). I wanted pupils to retain as much of the knowledge covered in my classes as possible. This is because:

  • pupils would view revision as something we did all year rather than a process shoehorned in at the end of the course
  • pupils should find future learning easier if they have readily accessible subject…
